Orphans and Vulnerable Children

“Every child is unique and that every effort should be made in order to help the child open up their capacities and let these blossom.”

Orphans and Vulnerable Children

HIV – AIDS victims including orphaned children are around 1.6 million out of a population or around 14 million. There is almost no household in Zimbabwe that has not been touched by HIV – AIDS.

I for one, have lost a sister and brother among so many other relatives and friends to HIV – AIDS. Both of mu siblings left young children some of whom were toddlers at the time of death. Some families have lost both parents with the result that in some cases children of 10 years of age or younger have taken the burden of looking after their siblings. In some cases grand parents have been recalled from retirement as it were, to take care of the children left behind ranging from a few months old to those in puberty.

In all these cases, there are almost no resources to talk about in order to care for the children. However, creative as they are, the people find ways to survive and give the children what future they can. At the same time neighbours and individuals with a high sense of social responsibility towards their communities have taken one or two or more orphans under their roof or provide food and clothing to the affected. Throughout the country people are doing their best to make the burden lighter for each other.

Every employed person in Zimbabwe contributes every month about 3% of their salary to the national Aids fund. This fund has become the basis for all HIV – AIDS interventions in the country and an important lifeline for many.

Due to the high rate of unemployment during the last years this fund has been drastically reduced leaving many without cover.

Many orphans have joined street life in order to look after themselves. This is where Touch Their Hearts Foundation and other similar organisations come in.

An institute would be put in place to cater for babies, toddlers and school age children – all orphans, mostly of HIV-AIDS. Children orphaned through other causes will be welcome.

The institute will be called Zano raMwari – Divine Inspiration. This name would always provide a living connection between the institute and the divine inspiration that led to its founding. So Touch Their Hearts Foundation will put up Zano raMwari – Divine Inspiration Institute.
